Tooth Vendor in Marrakech’s Djemaa El-Fna

Mar 27, 2013 by Daniel McBane 6 Comments

Tooth Seller Djemaa El-Fna

You can buy individual teeth or a full set with gums from this tooth vendor in Djemaa El-Fna in Marrakech, Morocco. If you read my previous post on Marrakech’s main square, you’ll know that this guy is only one of a countless number of interesting characters (remember her?) who hang out here.

That’s something I’ve definitely never seen before! I wonder where he sources his teeth?!

That is a really good question. I’m not entirely sure I want the answer though…

Ah, dredging up old memories of one of my favorite countries I see. As I said/commented before, I adore Morocco, but found Marrakesh to be a bit meh (leastwise compared to Chefchaouen, Fes and Essaouira). But in retrospect (after reading your hilarious story of the touts in Djemaa El-Fna) maybe that was only because I alas, was apparently not deemed worthy enough to have a serpent tossed around my neck, nor a monkey plopped on my head. Sadly, not even a hamster dropped into my bosom. ;(

Nonetheless, I did catch the “dentist” in Djemaa El-Fna (indeed, he looks much like the exact same fellow), and very nearly sprang for an upper plate – I thought it might make a trendy necklace. 😉

I didn’t even think of that…I should have bought a bunch of individual teeth to make a necklace. I could have used it to intimidate salespeople: “These teeth belonged to the last 5 vendors who tried to rip me off…what did you say your price was again?”

Another good question…I actually don’t know if they’re real or not.
